An inland Ibiza road, still rural, still slow.

06 — Change

The island did not freeze in 2001.

I loved it then. Loving it now means telling the truth about what got bigger, what got priced out, and what refused to move.

Then

Superclubs that still felt like a secret you had already been told.

2000 and 2001 sat at the crest of the classic era. Privilege could still swallow Manumission. Space still opened into the afternoon. Amnesia and Pacha were already legends, not heritage brands. DC-10 was new and slightly feral. A British weekly still mapped the island as if it were a festival with a sea around it.

It was already commercial. It was already crowded in August. Anyone who pretends those summers were innocent is selling something. They were, though, still porous: you could wander into a night and belong to it without a table, a wristband ecosystem, or a fortune.

A crowded dance floor at night, hands in the air.
The climate of those rooms

What closed, what opened

The map was rewritten in public.

  1. Manumission ends

The Monday circus at Privilege — theatre, scandal, the biggest room on earth — stops after a dispute with the club. Privilege keeps the dome. The night that defined a decade does not.

  2. El Divino becomes Lío

The marina club of 2000 and 2001, house and a view of Dalt Vila, closes. The Pacha group opens Lío in the same harbour: dinner, cabaret, a different kind of glamour. The same year, Ibiza Rocks turns a hotel into a stage.

  3. Ushuaïa

The hotel-club. Daytime, pool, headliners, a new economy of spectacle facing Platja d’en Bossa. Ibiza Rocks had already tried the hotel-as-stage. Ushuaïa made it the main act.

  4. Heart Ibiza

Cirque du Soleil and the Adrià brothers in the marina: food, theatre, a night that wanted to be art. It lasted until 2019. The building later became Club Chinois.

  5. Space closes

After 27 years the lease ends. Carl Cox plays the last Sunday. People treat it like a funeral because it is one. A sustainable tourism tax arrives the same year, an official admission that the island is thirsty and full.

  6. Hï Ibiza

The Space building returns as Hï, under the same group as Ushuaïa. DJ Mag will later call it the best club in the world, repeatedly. A different church in the same walls.

  7. Privilege goes dark

The giant in Sant Rafel, once Ku, once the Guinness largest club, shuts. Heart closes the same era. Two rooms that had tried to be more than a DJ booth go quiet.

  8. Bora Bora · Club Chinois

The beach club on Platja d’en Bossa, open since 1982, holds a last dance and is later demolished. In the marina, Club Chinois opens in the old Heart. One climate ends in sand. Another arrives as costume.

  9. UNVRS

Privilege’s hill returns as UNVRS, billed as a hyperclub, with Carl Cox back on Sundays — a circle closing on a different hill from Space. The island still wants a cathedral.

The cost

Water, beds, and 21 tourists for every resident.

IbizaPreservation and local reporting have made the numbers hard to romanticise: aquifers in poor health, more than half the urban water from desalination, waste rising, a summer density the villages were never built for. “Menys turisme, més vida” — less tourism, more life — is a slogan with a body behind it.

DJ fees that were tens of thousands in 2005 became hundreds of thousands, then more. VIP tables turned the floor into a hierarchy. The island that taught the world to mix anything now sells a luxury product called Ibiza. Both things can be true at once: the production is extraordinary, and something unbuyable got harder to find.

Heritage is not a backdrop

What remains

The magic was never only a guest list.

Dalt Vila is still on the hill. The posidonia is still the forest under the boat. Es Vedrà still arrives in the windshield like a hallucination. A finca wall still holds the afternoon. People still clap at Café del Mar. Friends are still made in the dark. Pacha and Amnesia are still themselves, more or less. The north can still go quiet.

I do not need 2001 back as a theme park. I need the island to remain an island: salt, pine, music, and a feeling that does not fit on a wristband. That is why this site exists. To remember accurately. To love without lying.
